Majority of youths in large cities has non-Western heritage

AMSTERDAM - Most people aged 20 years and younger in Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam have a non-Western background. In the three largest cities in the Netherlands one in three of the general population has such roots. Ten years ago, this number stood at one-in-four. Census figures indicate however that in the three cities the number of first generation non-Western inhabitants is declining. Outside the three largest cities, the percentage of non-Western inhabitants hovers just below ten percent, with only a slight increase recently because more people with non-Western parents opt to live away from the cities.
