Drenthe town vicinity home to two wartime underground hiding chambers

DIEVER – The vicinity of the Drenthe town of Diever is home to two underground chambers used by the Dutch resistance to Nazi German occupation during World War II. The first chamber, which was used as a place of refuge for people sought by the authorities, has been restored as an historical site by a local heritage preservation group. The second site had escaped documentation until now but has been identified as a hiding place used by the resistance group which in the Fall of 1944 sprung dozens of people from the Assen penitentiary. Not a shot was fired in the well organized Assen raid. Both chambers are located in then isolated forests.
