AMSTERDAM - A new book by a Dutch rabbi presents an overview of Amsterdam’s Jewish religious traditions and practices throughout the centuries. Evers, the rector of the Dutch-Israeli Seminarium, translated and reworked the text from the Hebrew language. The book is based on the rules for the ceremonial order of the synagogues of the Dutch-Israeli central synagogue dated from 1716, 1814 and 1901 plus other written sources. The book notes that the Jewish congregation in Amterdam developed customs and rituals that are unique in the world. Amsterdam mayor Job Cohen was presented with the first copy of the book.
