Sinterklaas by far most popular Dutch tradition

UTRECHT – The Dutch rate their Sinterklaas festivities as the most important tradition, concludes a study commissioned by the Nederlands Centrum voor Volkscultuur. Ninety percent of the respondents picked Sinterklaas as their top choice, including those without any children of their own. The otherwise popular Koninginnedag merited a distant second, followed by the rite of treating coworkers and friends to beschuit met muisjes, hail layered rusk following the arrival of a new addition in one’s family. The NCV wondered why December 5, the eve that Dutch highways and towns look deserted because of the family celebrations is not a Dutch holiday. NCV did not say if Sinterklaas had been consulted on the matter.
