Skippers’ home misses Heemschut’s heritage site designation

IJZENDIJKE – Vereniging Erfgoed Heemschut (a name which can be translated as Association Heritage Protectors) is a national umbrella group with an activist agenda to safeguard Dutch (architectural) heritage sites. The range it covers includes all types of buildings, bridges, water locks and industrial structures. Heemschut has won many battles but it failed to save IJzendijke’s 400-year old skippers’ home and its adjoining century-old insurance office. Its proposal to designate these buildings as heritage sites arrived when demolition permits had been granted.
