ZWEELOO – Local resident Jan Warmolts still remember how at age twelve he watched the excavations near the local church. In 1952, archeologists unearthed a significant burial site from the fourth till the sixth century, including the discovery of the remains of a young woman who had been buried with six horses, one upright. Near the woman, archeologists also found bead necklaces, one with crystal beads and another set with amber stones weighing a kilogram. Such a find would today attract the attention of the international media, noted Warmolts, who successfully campaigned for a proper site marker to inform visitors of the archeological location. Warmolts and a fellow campaigner were knighted for their efforts.
