Joint effort at teaching foreign students cycling the Dutch way

WAGENINGEN – Bicyclists visiting the Netherlands from abroad, especially if they are university students, often have difficulty coping with Dutch roads, the town of Wageningen has discovered. Other road users around the town regularly see examples of foreigners exhibiting dangerous behaviour on their bicycles in traffic. It prompted the municipality to set up a website http://www.cyclinginwageningen.nl designed to teach foreigners how to bike safely around on the Wageningen roads. The site is a joint effort by the municipality and created by staff and students at Wageningen UR with the support of Mobycon. The website is nearly all in English, the exception being two common Dutch words. One listed in the Tips & Tricks section is: "'Hoooooooo”, with the 'o' sound as in 'go', meaning stop. The site explains traffic signs and traffic rules, in particular the rules for right of way.
