Decorated tiles discovered behind wall coverings

ASSENDELFT – The plan to build two new residences at Dorpsstraat 861-863 generated much discussion about the value of the existing structures of which one is very characteristic for the area. Hence the call to preserve the building. Since the house was not registered as a monument and therefore not protected, there was no legal barrier in place to deny any permits. However, instead of demolishing the house, it was decided to disassemble it for reassembly elsewhere. Preceding the work to take the house down, many people turned out to view it one last time. The house did not disappoint the workers who discovered decorated tiles behind the plastered over walls, revealing its age as well, pointing to 1741. The discovery was a surprise to its former owners.
