Grijs geheugen 943 namen
De geschiedenis van Nederland en Vlaanderen in 943 namen
by Vandenbroucke, Dieter, & de Weijer, J.
The authors aim to generate interest in Dutch and Flemish history by building up knowledge of facts about dates, names and places. This book is the second one of a three-volume series on the distant past of the Netherlands and Flanders, roughly the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium. The concept of 'Grijs geheugen' (literally Grey Memory) has a double meaning. 'Grijs' could suggest foggy, distant but is in fact one of the pennames (Stoker, Raoul Chapkis and Battus are the others) for Dutch columnist and information scholar Hugo Brandt Corstius who introduces this collection of biographies, geheugen, in this book. There are 943 thumbnail sketches of people who played an important role in Dutch and Flemish history. Listed alphabetically are among others: Hendrick Avercamp (painter), Marco Borsato (singer), Willem Drees (Dutch labour premier), Anne Frank (young Holocaust diarist), Willem van Hanegem (former soccer star), Piet Hein (admiral who captured Spanish silver fleet), Hergé (Belgian cartoonist and writer), Marga Klompé (first Dutch woman cabinet minister), Eric de Kuyper (Flemish art critic and film director), Christoffel Plantijn (16th century book printer), Rob Scholte (artist), Andreas Vesalius (author of one of the most influential books on human anatomy) and Nicolaas Zannekin (14th century leader of the Flemish farmer revolt).
