Kampen's economic development was based on trade and merchant marine which in this book receives exhaustive attention along with the city's social history. The post-1800 economic climate owes much to the tobacco industry (Kampen was famous for its cigars), the army garrison, the rise of new subdivisions, and modern infrastructures which made the city very accessible.
