Volendam I
Dutch Heritage Ceramic Wall Plaque
by Heppner, Sheldon, design
SOLD OUT! This exclusive Delft blue-style ceramic wall plaque makes a great commemorative gift, especially for anniversaries of an immigration date, immigration reunions and family gatherings. Launched on July 6, 1922 and made her maiden voyage from Rotterdam to New York on November 4, 1922. In May of 1940 the Volendam temporarily housed the exiled Dutch government while at Falmouth, England. In 1946 it was used for shipping Dutch troops to Indonesia and sailing immigrants from Rotterdam to Australia. In 1947 it commenced summer sailings between Rotterdam and New York. Numerous postwar Dutch immigrants crossed the Atlantic aboard The Volendam I between 1949 and 1951. No passenger lists of those crossings have turned up. The first such 1949 sailing left Rotterdam on June 17, followed by another one on July 19. In 1950 more Dutch immigrants departed aboard the Volendam I, April 3, May 16, June 18, July 11 and August 8. In 1951, the sailings resumed on February 13, followed by those of March 15, April 14, May 15, June 13, July 11, August 7, October 2 and 24. Various Volendam I passengers contributed their recollections to the book To All Our Children.
The Project I Remember welcomes the participation of Dutch immigrant families and others who crossed the Atlantic Ocean aboard the Volendam I.
The 6"x6" (15cmx15cm) plaques have protective cork feet for surface use and a hanger for display on walls. They are packaged and shipped in styrofoam-lined boxes. These plaques can be found throughout North America at thousands of Dutch immigrant homes. SOLD OUT
