The Basics: A Guide
Chapter 22
Websites on Internet helpful with genealogical research
The newest research tool for the genealogy is the internet. There are many sites on the internet that deal with Dutch genealogy. Every day there are new ones added. Many of the archives in the Netherlands and many of the large genealogical organizations have sites available on the internet. Here follows a list of some of the ones that I have found recently. Where possible I will indicate what is to be found on that site.
This is the homepage of Arie Jan Stasse. It is also the site where you can find information on Gens Nostra and the Nederlandse Genealogische Vereniging. - http://www.cbg.nl
This is the site of the Centraal Bureau voor Genealogie. - http://home.wxs.nl/~klo/
This site has many links to other sites dealing with genealogy in the Netherlands. It is worth a visit. - http://www.prometheus-delft.org/
This is the official site of the Genealogische Vereniging Promotheus. They publish a magazine called Kronieken. They also publish each year a collection of genealogies.
*hg1.* (one not "L") - www.ryksargyf.org - database found under
onderzoek -> stamboom. All in Dutch.
On this site you will find the name acquisition (naamsaanemingen) records of 1811, 1812, 1826 in Friesland. A very useful genealogical aid. - http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/index.htm
This is the site of the British Columbia (Canada) archives. If you have family that moved to BC and died or married there you may want to take a look at this site. - http://www.godutch.com
The official site of the Windmill Herald. An excellent page to visit since you are on it!!! - http://www.geocities.com/Athens/4074
This is my homepage.
As well as the internet there is e-mail. E-mail makes a quick exchange of information possible. Through e-mail and the internet many connections can be made with family previously not known. I have two incidents which I would like to relate. For some time I had been in contact with Rudi van der Linde because he was on the board of the Oud-Aalsmeer Stichting. Many of my forebears came from Aalsmeer. One day Rudi asked me if we had in Canada an equivalent to the Persoonskaarten. He asked me this because he was looking for the family of Hendrik van der Linde and Hiltje Hansma. Among the children listed was Hein van der Linde. Was I surprised. Hein van der Linde (died 3 years ago) was my wife's brother-in-law. Apparently Hein and Rudi were distant cousins.
The second incident happened just recently. A Marina Gertruida Hofstede wrote me an e-mail message stating that she was a descendant of Maarten Cornelis Hofstede born in 1737 in Woubrugge. Maarten was a brother of my ancestor Jan Cornelis Hofstede born in 1744. My brother and I had lost the family of Maarten Cornelis Hofstede in 1805 in Delft. We have tried for the last 10 years to find descendants of this family and here suddenly out of the blue we find a descendant. We will now have to update our book again as Martina Gertruida has started to fill us in with information about her ancestors. Good luck to all of you in your searches for your forebears.
